Fluoride Free Homemade Remineralizing Toothpaste

A homemade toothpaste recipe to help remineralize your teeth and keep them smooth and white. This fluoride Free Homemade Remineralizing Toothpaste is made with coconut oil, baking soda and some specialty ingredients, it’s a fresh and healthy alternative to store bought toothpaste!

I know that making your own toothpaste might seem a little hippy dippy at first, but there is actually a strong connection to oral health and overall health. In fact, there have been studies linking gum disease and heart disease? Oral health is incredibly important.

Fortunately, in addition to going to the dentist regularly, brushing and flossing and maintaining a healthy diet low is refined sugars, there are also specific ingredients we can use on our teeth to help add minerals back in and prevent and even reverse cavities.

Everyone is familiar with toothpaste. But while people are becoming more mindful and aware of the healthy, or not-so-healthy, elements of what we eat, not everyone is aware of the potentially detrimental impacts of our toothpaste. We do after all consume toothpaste whether we like it or not. While brushing your teeth, what you don’t accidentally swallow can be absorbed through the tongue and gums.

Fluoride Free Homemade Remineralizing ToothpasteHarmful Ingredients

Traditional toothpaste often contains ingredients that can be harmful if ingested in large quantities. Some ingredients like sodium fluoride and triclosan, are included in pesticides – or even classified as a pesticide!! Another ingredient called diethanolamine, you’ll see labeled as “DEA”, is used to make toothpaste foam.  Sadly DEA has been linked to cancer. Is a foaming toothpaste that important?

This doesn’t mean that we stop using toothpaste all together. We make our own toothpaste, of course! You may be surprised at how easily you can take care of your own dental health using ordinary kitchen ingredients.

A Healthy Recipe for Homemade Toothpaste

Here’s a recipe for a homemade toothpaste. Most ingredients you’ll already find in your kitchen cabinet. Feel free to adjust the oil/baking soda ratio to meet your personal preferences and also play around with flavor profiles using food-grade essential oils.

Using homemade toothpaste in addition to oil pulling (which you can read more about HERE) will help your teeth stay white, clean and cavity free!

Powerhouse Ingredients:

Calcium Carbonate

This may not be a product that you naturally find in your medicine cabinet but it is very beneficial to oral health. Calcium Carbonate helps to remineralize and strengthen your teeth, supplying it with essential calcium. It also helps with the removal of stains and eliminating debris.

Baking Soda

As a child I remember my father making us hold our toothbrush out once a week while he shook baking soda onto it and made us brush our teeth with it.  I didn’t look forward to those days, but now realize that my father was actually onto something! Gum disease is caused by an accumulation of plaque build up on the teeth and brushing with baking soda helps prevent this formation. In addition, the mild abrasiveness helps remove surface stains from the teeth helping to make them appear whiter.

It should be noted that continual (everyday) use of straight baking soda could damage the enamel over time. To prevent this, we baking soda is simply added to our toothpaste instead of used on its own.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen Peroxide also helps to whiten teeth in addition to containing antimicrobial properties that help fight plaque, gingivitis, and bleeding gums and eliminate odor-causing bacteria from the mouth.

Sea Salt

Yes, sea salt for dental health.  The first time I encountered sea salt for tooth health was at a spa where they offered sea salt and disposable tooth brushes to give your mouth a quick scrub. As I researched more about it, it now makes perfect sense.  Sea salt is high in minerals and trace elements which are beneficial to your teeth and gums while also increasing the pH balance of your mouth, making it hard for bacteria to survive.    Sea salt helps to remove tartar, whiten teeth and eliminate bad breath.

Xylitol

You’ll notice that I added  Xylitol, a natural sweetener, to this recipe.  Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is diabetic friendly because it does not spike blood sugar levels and you may already be familiar with it from some of my other Anti-Candida Recipes. The addition of xylitol to this toothpaste recipe is two-fold.

1. Adding xylitol helps make the toothpaste slightly sweet and more palatable.

2. Xylitol is also known to be extremely beneficial for oral health.  Xylitol keeps a neutral pH level in the mouth and prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth. It also inhibits acid production and promotes remineralisation of the teeth.

Not bad for a sweetener, eh?! You can learn more about Xylitol’s dental benefits HERE.

Clove Essential Oil

Clove has antibacterial properties and is thought to help prevent gum disease such as gingivitis.  Clove also is thought to reduce gum swelling and irritation thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties and stimulates circulation due to its “hot” property.  This helps enhance gum tissue health.  Thank you Clove!!!

  • Love this idea. I made some from a recipe you posted on Instagram a while back and thought it worked great. The only issue is I wish I could figure out a good container to keep it in. The glass storage container is pretty cumbersome and not good for travel. What do you recommend?

  • Hi. I’m really keen on giving this a go. I’m having trouble sourcing the hydrgen peroxide. I’ve sourced other stuff from iherb. What kind of store sells it. I’m in NZ

    • I’d try your local drugstore or Amazon. Just make sure it says for oral health. If it’s stronger than 3%, dilute it slightly with filtered water. Hope this helps and you’re able to find it 🙂
