Coffee is probably one of the toughest things to give up while following a candida diet. This drink is here to help! Here’s a recipe for a Yerba Mate “Latte” that’s warm, frothy and free of dairy and sugar. It’s the perfect coffee alternative that you can indulge in without fear of blowing your Candida Diet.
Coffee and a Candida Diet
One of the questions I get asked most often from clients on a Candida diet is if they can still have their morning cup of coffee? Sadly the answer is no. It’s best to avoid coffee in the first couple of months of a candida cleanse, and there’s a couple of reasons for that.
For starters, with coffee usually comes cream and sugar, which are also no’s while on a candida cleanse. Coffee beans are also thought to be at risk for carrying mold, which you definitely want to avoid while trying to beat candida. Finally, drinking too much coffee is taxing on your adrenal glands. Adrenal fatigue usually goes hand and hand with a candida problem. Caffeine stimulates you by telling the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline – your fight or flight hormone. This is what gives you that burst of energy. However, allowing this to happen constantly puts the body under physical stress – stress that can eventually lead to adrenal fatigue and complications for your Candida recovery.
When Candida became problematic for me…
I have firsthand experience with adrenal fatigue. After I finished culinary school and moved back to California, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Not only did I move states two times in one year, but I also started a new career and ended a four year relationship. All of a sudden my body couldn’t handle it anymore, and I crumbled.
Like most things health related, I’m sure there were signs that this was happening along the way. But I’ll never forget the constant fatigue that I couldn’t seem to shake, no matter how many cups of coffee I drank.
Yerba Mate to the rescue
If you’re also dealing with chronic fatigue, the last thing you want to hear is that coffee has to go. Don’t worry, this drink is here to help. Yerba Mate is an herbal tea made from the leaves and twigs of the Ilex paraguariensis plant. It does contain small amounts of caffeine, but it’s also rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Yerba Mate is thought to lower blood sugar levels and help improve energy and mental focus.
In this drink, Yerba Mate powder is mixed with non-dairy milk, coconut oil and a combination of xylitol and liquid stevia to sweeten. Blend it all together on high speed, and you get a frothy beverage that will keep you satisfied.

- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond coconut or hemp milk
- 1 Tablespoon Yerba Mate powder I prefer Yerba Mate Royale
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon xylitol
- 4 – 6 drops liquid stevia
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch sea salt
Instructions
-
Add the filtered water and non-dairy milk to a small saucepan and heat over medium low until almost boiling. Carefully transfer to a blender.
-
Add remaining ingredients to the blender. Place a dishtowel over the lid to protect your hand from the hot liquid and start blending at a low speed, gradually increasing to a high speed. Blend for about 30 - 45 seconds, or until mixture starts to look frothy.
-
Pour into your favorite coffee mug and enjoy.
Recipe Notes
*If you would like a stronger latte, add more yerba mate, 1 teaspoon at a time, during blending. Wisdom of the Ancients Instant Yerba Mate Royale is sweetened with stevia, so there is no need to add more sweetener when using this brand.
Is the reason behind no coffee on a candida diet due to possible Mycotoxins?
oops, just read your post, silly me. It already explained about Mycotoxins. Thank you
